چکیده
Bioavailability File: Metronidazole Summary Metronidazole is an antimicrobial nitroimidazole derivative, which was originally introduced to treat Trichomonas vaginalis but nowadays is used for the treatment of anaerobic and protozoal infections. Metronidazole is bactericidal through toxic metabolites, which cause deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) strand breakage. It has a bioavailability of more than 90% after oral administration. The drug is metabolized by the liver and the hydroxy-metabolite has also a therapeutic effect. In this review, the physicochemical structure, assay methods, pharmacological and pharmacokinetical properties, and bioavailability of metronidazole are summarized.

[The effect of selected hydrophilisers on metronidazole release from hydrogels stomatological dressings on the basis of Carbopol 971].
The aim of this study was to assess the influence of qualitative and quantitative base composition on pharmaceutical availability of metronidazole. Hydrogels contain water dispersion of 2% Carbopol 971P and various concentration of glycerol, polyethylene glycol and propylene glycol were preparated. Produced formulations were neutralized to the pH 6.0-6.5 with triethanolamine, and metronidazole ...
متن کاملBioadhesive Controlled Metronidazole Release Matrix Based on Chitosan and Xanthan Gum
Metronidazole, a common antibacterial drug, was incorporated into a hydrophilic polymer matrix composed of chitosan xanthan gum mixture. Hydrogel formation of this binary chitosan-xanthan gum combination was tested for its ability to control the release of metronidazole as a drug model. This preparation (MZ-CR) was characterized by in vitro, ex vivo bioadhesion and in vivo bioavailability study...
متن کاملPreparation and Cyclodextrin Solubilization of the Antibacterial Agent Benzoyl Metronidazole
A one-pot method for the preparation of benzoyl metronidazole was achieved by using N,N'-carbonyldiimidazole as a coupling reagent. Moreover, it was found that the byproduct imidazole as the catalyst promoted the reaction. In addition, the β-cyclodextrin solubilization of benzoyl metronidazole was investigated by phase-solubility method. The phase-solubility studies indicated that the solubilit...
متن کاملPlasma Concentrations of Oral Metronidazole in the Early Post-Laparotomy Periods
Background: The bioavailability of metronidazole after oral ingestion, in ordinary conditions, is quite similar to intravenous administration of the drug. However, the degree of its absorption is not known in the early periods after laparotomy. Objective: To determine plasma levels of metronidazole in pediatric patients following elective abdominal surgery. Methods: The study group was compri...
متن کاملhypromellose, polyethylene glycol, stearic acid, and titanium dioxide. CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY Absorption Disposition of metronidazole in the body is similar for both oral and intravenous dosage
Plasma concentrations of metronidazole are proportional to the administered dose. Oral administration of 250 mg, 500 mg, or 2,000 mg produced peak plasma concentrations of 6 mcg/mL, 12 mcg/mL, and 40 mcg/mL, respectively. Studies reveal no significant bioavailability differences between males and females; however, because of weight differences, the resulting plasma levels in males are generally...
